佐世保カヤックキャンプツアー

I can’t believe we almost missed this!

Top_20110915103120.jpg

Last Friday I was feeling really depressed. Because of an approaching Typhoon , we had cancelled the Kayaking camp tour that I had been so looking forward to. So I went to bed on Friday trying to think of all the stuff I should do during my 2 rainy days in the shop.

Then came Saturday morning, I awoke to a beautiful bright sun lighting up my room that according to the weather forecast should have been more a grey colour then blue. That sent me racing to the front of my computer to once again check where the typhoon was. It seems that throughout the night the typhoon had taken a turn towards China leaving Sasebo with relatively calm waters and blue sky. I immediately reached for my phone to call up the other tour members to tell them that the tour is on!

Matsumoto San from Southern Works and I were surprised to find that all of the people who signed up for the tour were good to go so we packed up all our stuff and headed out. Needless to say that the start time was a little later than I would have, liked but was glad to be able to go because we had a great time.

After paddling out to the deserted island we setup camp and started making dinner and after that, Campfire!! Dave was there providing the BGM with songs of yesteryear and the almost full moon made everything easy to see.

The next morning I once again was happy to see a big blue sky and the sandpipers were busily gathering their morning grub along the beach while we got our breakfast going. After a bit of fun time on the beach and packing up our stuff we headed back to complete our wonderful journey complete with a trip to the local burger joint for some Sasebo Burgers.

Not quite the weekend I had planned!

Top_20110906003659.jpg

If you look at the Amarok schedule for the past weekend you’d see 2 days of fun in the sun at the annual Sunset live event. A really fun time that I look forward to every year as we work with The North Face Store to provide some light Kayak adventures for all the fun loving people at the event。。。but not this year!

The event was still held, albeit with a few delays, but because of the Typhoon the ocean conditions sucked. Huge waves were crashing along the shoreline and all over the place putting an end to my annual fun time for 2011.

But fear not as there is no rest for the wicked, just as I was beginning to thinking about what to do with my free time on Sunday I got a phone call from the Rescue Dog Association telling me about a search on Sunday and if we were free to go. So off we went!

5_20110906003939.jpg 6_20110906003949.jpg

The search was for an 85 year old woman who had left her house in Kokonoe, Oita, on the 19th of August and had not yet come home. For about 3 days after she went missing the police and fire departments search the area but not a trace was found.

After the local authorities gave up the search the family called on us to continue and we did, with 4 energetic and well trained German shepherds and their handlers. We started the search at around 0900 Sunday morning and after about an hour of searching we found her. Unfortunately she was deceased at the bottom of a steep ravine but we took comfort that we could help the family finally bring some sort of closure to this traumatic event.

Once again this experience has brought up feeling about the whole rescue response system in this country. The police only brought out 1 search dog at the start of the search on the 20th. I dog can only search a certain amount. If we had received a callout at the beginning of the incident we would have brought more dogs to cover more area and she could have been brought home on the 20th of August instead of on the 4th of September as it only took us an hour to do what they couldn`t do in 3 days.

I hope they come to realize this soon!

カヤックツアー

A couple of great days on the water

top_20110902001639.jpg

Well the hot weather has returned to become a traditional Japanese summer and what better way to enjoy the summer than to go play in the ocean, which is exactly what we have done for the last few days.

3_20110902001746.jpg 4_20110902001753.jpg

Both days we headed out to an uninhabited island in the Munakata area for some great kayaking. On Sunday the wind was a little too strong to make it out to the island so we pulled into a private beach for some beachcombing, lunch and some playtime in the water with masks and snorkels! Great fun on a hot day!

5_20110902001825.jpg 6_20110902001833.jpg

On Wednesday we headed out again to celebrate a young boys 5th birthday. His wonderful parents wanted to give him a day to remember and they sure did! He was so excited, as I was paddling he kept shouting “Look at the Jellyfish!”, “Did you see that fish!”, “Mom you guys are going slower than us!” along with the occasional, ”Waaaaaaaa!”. Yeah, he had a great time and so did we just watching his excitement! The wind wasn’t as strong this time so we could make it across to the island and once again play in the water and relax at the beach.

A great couple of days, this kayaking thing is fun! Once again I want to thank Southern Works for letting us use the kayaks and I look forward to the next time we can go! This coming weekend we'll be at Sunset Live conducting Kayaking tours if you head over there stop by for a visit!

Until next time!
