Paddling Our Way to a Great day!

Top_20110822002932.jpg

Saturday we made our way down to the 99 Islands of Sasebo for a day of Kayaking. The weather report was a little bleak with a forecast of rain throughout the day but we decided to brave it anyway, and we are sure glad we did.

1_20110822003007.jpg 2_20110822003123.jpg

True to the forecast, the day started off with a fairly good rain shower which gave the start of the trip a bit of a Vancouver kayaking feel to it. But by the time we pulled into a small cove for lunch the weather had cleared and we actually started to get some blue sky! Perfect timing!!

After lunch we combed the seashore checking out all the little sea creatures hiding in the tidal pools and shoreline, there were shrimp, crabs, and even a few small squid which made for a really wonderful experience.

The journey back was just as enjoyable and relaxing as the way out with almost no waves and the occasional fish jumping near our kayaks and Seagulls and Black Kites looking at us paddling along with curious eyes.

I want to thank Southern Works for providing us with the Kayaks and essential gear for the trip. Our next trip on the water will be on Sunday, August 28th. If you would like to join us just drop me an email at john@amarok-outdoors.com

Until next time!

Summer Fun in the Sun!

Top_20110818132235.jpg

By now I’m sure that you have read about our great trip to Mt. Fuji so I just want to fill you in on a couple other fun events we had over the holiday.

3_20110818132935.jpg 2_20110818132942.jpg

The day we left for Mt. Fuji we also had a one day Kayaking trip out in Munakata with Southern Works. The weather was sunny and hot with a big blue sky above us as we paddled out to an uninhabited island for a yummy lunch and a bit of beachcombing. It was really a wonderful day on the water and a great way to start of an adventurous holiday week.

4_20110818133143.jpg 5_20110818133217.jpg

After returning from Mt. Fuji we headed up to Mt. Fukuchi taking the “Nanae No Taki”,or “7 waterfalls “route up. This is quite a long route but a great one to take in the summer as we pass along, and some of us under, 7 ice cold waterfalls through the forest before reaching the top.

6_20110818135407.jpg 7_20110818135413.jpg

Once again the weather was splendid and we were rewarded with a nice cool breeze once we reached the top to cool us off as we enjoyed the view and watched a beautiful bird of prey hovering not far above us. Seemed to be eyeing Manachan but thought better of it once she realized the size of her.

10_20110818135602.jpg 11_20110818135609.jpg

The route down was also a pleasant walk through the forest with the Cicadas and other summer forest insects joining with songbirds to give us a relaxing soundtrack during our descent.

13_20110818135658.jpg 15_20110818135704.jpg

To top off the days adventure we headed to the local Mos Burger to suck back our “Gohobi” or reward, a delicious Milkshake, before heading home.

12_20110818135646.jpg 16_20110818135710.jpg

A great couple of ways to have fun during the summer! Our next adventure will be another Kayaking trip on the 20th there’s still room available so if you would like to join us drop me an email at john@amarok-outdoors.com

富士山ツアー

To the top of Japan and back again!

Top_20110808231851.jpg

Last weekend we held our first ever tour to the highest peak in Japan, Mt. Fuji the beautiful symmetrical stratovolcano that has long been a symbol of Japan.

1_20110808231926.jpg 2_20110808231933.jpg
3_20110808232121.jpg 4_20110808232127.jpg

After reaching Osaka we drove to the bottom of the 5th station of the Yoshida route, the most popular route, where we took a bus to the 5th station and the trailhead up. We started our adventure around 1500 when we slowly worked our way up to “Toyokan”, one of many mountain huts that dot the landscape and our place of short refuge before heading up to the top. We got there around 1800 where we were shown to our bunks and after a yummy dinner we got some “Shut Eye”.

5_20110808232212.jpg 6_20110808232218.jpg
7_20110808232223.jpg 8_20110808232231.jpg

Still groggy we packed up our stuff and headed out at around 12:30 in the morning using only our headlamps to guide us along the trail. You might ask us “Why would you start you hike in the middle of the night?”, well one of the most popular things to do on this mountain is to view the sunrise from its’ summit and that’s what we wanted to do too!

9_20110808232314.jpg 10_20110808232319.jpg

We weren’t the only people who wanted to do this, there we A LOT of other people with the same idea. Every once in a while we stopped to take a breather and when we looked back down toward the route we had just climbed there was a continuous line headlamps snaking their way up the trail.

11_20110808232325.jpg 12_20110808232333.jpg

We stopped just below the summit to kick back and get setup for the rising sun. The sun was greeted with many “Ooooohs and Ahhhhhs as it pierced the horizon and gave us a most beautiful sunrise.

13_20110808232459.jpg 14_20110808232508.jpg

After enjoying once of the most beautiful experiences you can have in Japan we continued up to the summit that was covered with “Omiyage” shops, and continued along the summit until we reached the Fuji summit Post Office where we mailed a postcard back to the shop and licked back to enjoy the view….and our breakfast!

15_20110808232604.jpg

After slowly making our way back down to the 5th station we hopped on the shuttle bus and headed back to the truck and our trip back to Fukuoka.

カヤックツアー

This is how to enjoy summer!

top_20110803014618.jpg

Hey everyone I hope you all had a great weekend, we sure did! On Sunday we spent the day kayaking around the beautiful waters of Fukuoka.

1_20110803014707.jpg 2_20110803014712.jpg

This was a joint tour between Amarok and Southern Works, and one of many more to come! We loaded up both our vehicles with Kayaks and met everyone at the beach.

3_20110803014742.jpg 4_20110803014747.jpg

After some quick instruction we paddled out to a deserted island and pulled up on the beach for a delicious lunch and some snorkeling to cool off.

5_20110803014819.jpg 6_20110803014824.jpg

We took our time coming back to the beach enjoying the nice scenery and the big blue sky. It was a great day and I can’t wait until our next trip on the 4th of August. There are still spots open if you would like to join. Just drop me an email to sign up.
