I know this report is about a week late but it’s been a crazy week so at last here it is!

We had 3 days of great Rescue Dog training in Kumamoto! We headed down Saturday morning and did some wilderness search training along the base of Mt. Shiraga before heading back to the main training field to set up our tents.

That evening a team from Saitama Rescue Dog association arrived including Eguchi San the Team leader . Eguchi san and I worked together up in Kesennuma after the earthquake and tsunami so it was great to see her again!

The next day we had permission to use an old school for training, it hadn’t been used since about 2003 and a lot of the stuff was just as they left it. About 15 Members of KRDA took part in the training along with the team from Saitama.

The dogs did great work searching for human scent among all the debris. It was a rally hot day and all the dogs did great and got some yummy rewards at the end of the day.

The next morning we had a discussion session along with training on how to better read wind and work the dogs on the scent cone before heading to the mountains for some more wilderness searching.

The following Wednesday we went back down again just for the day as Japan Rescue, another Rescue dog association, was coming down from Osaka for some training.

It was a great few days of really good training with a bunch of great, dedicated people. Can’t wait to do it again.

A day on Yufuin’s mountain

top_20110710180912.jpg

Is everyone enjoying the weekend? We had a great day yesterday when we went to climb the monolithic mountain Yufudake. The weather was nice with sunny blue skies and a cool breeze to take the nip off the heat as we worked our way up the trail.

We stopped for lunch where the trail divides to each of Yufudake’s summits ( It has two!), and then we climbed up to the higher summit to take in a beautiful view of Yufuin and beyond.

We usually see or at least hear some deer when we go to Yufudake but not this time I guess they all head for cooler pastures during the summer, but deer or no deer this is a great place to visit and we had a really wonderful day.

Happy trails!

A mystical day in Kuju

Top_20110705100753.jpg

With all the rain we’ve been getting in June it was great to get back out for a hike to start off July. The weather was still cloudy and finished off with a bit of rain again but it was a really fun day.

1_20110705100911.jpg 2_20110705100918.jpg

The mountains were covered with low lying clouds giving Kuju a Yakushima type feel, we changed our plan from going to the top of Heiji to going to Bogatsuru Camp area to enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by nature.

After lunch we headed to my favorite waterfall “Kurazome No Taki”, where we sat soaking up minus ions while sipping on coffee and snacks. Unfortunately minus ions weren’t the only thing we soaked up as the heavens opened and rain set us packing up our gear.

A quick trip to the onsen after the hike and into dry clothes put a nice finish on a great day! Can’t wait to head out again. Our next trip will be this coming Saturday, July 9th, if you want to go for a hike and enjoy the nature of Kyushu send me an email at john@amarok-outdoors.com
