Kuju Mountain Tour

IMG_7617.jpg

Hey everyone, how was your weekend? We had a great trip to Kuju last Saturday. The sun was shining with only a few clouds in the sky and many autumn flowers were in bloom as we made our way up from the Makinoto trailhead.

IMG_7624.jpg IMG_7630.jpg IMG_7640.jpg

We reached the summit around noon and after taking photos we worked our way down the slope a bit and found a beautiful spot overlooking Naka dake and the surrounding area where we stopped for a yummy lunch of Goto udon.

As we were eating some more clouds started rolling in so we packed up and slowly meandered our way back to our starting point practicing our marco photography along the way.

Then it was off to Hita city for some delicious gyoza at “Ipishan”. A great way to finish off a great day!

Until next time, happy trails!

屋久島ツアー

Yakushima Tour

View from Ferry

Hey everyone, how was your silver week? We had an awesome time in one of the most magical places in Japan if not the world, Yakushima! We headed out in the wee hours of the morning on Monday ( I actually had to literally pull Dave away from the dartboard and out of the bar!!)
After the 3 hours drive to Kagoshima we clambered on to the Yakushima 2 ferry and headed off on our adventure. While Dave had a needed nap some of us grabbed a bowl of yummy Udon before arriving in Miyanoura city, Yakushima.

IMG_7225.jpg IMG_7223.jpg IMG_7255.jpg

Upon arriving we headed up to Yakushima Land, a small park on the island with a series of trails of varying length through beautiful forests of moss and huge cedar trees or “ Yakusugi”. We headed along the 80 minute course for a quick hike before heading to setup camp. Along the way we found a beautiful river side setting where we couldn`t help but stop for a coffee break and soak up the heavenly setting.

IMG_7289.jpg IMG_7295.jpg IMG_7304.jpg

After pulling ourselves away from the riverside we headed along the trail eventually leading back to the parking lot. The drive down the mountain was also a treat as there we tons of “Yakusaru” and "Yakushika",some who seemed sad to see us go, some who were wondering where we were going, and some who could care less.

IMG_7351.jpg IMG_7367.jpg IMG_7353.jpg

We setup camp at the seaside campground in Anbo town and enjoyed a delicious BBQ before heading off to sleep as we had an early morning planned. The next day for us started just before 6 am as we all woke up for a beautiful sunrise and a yummy breakfast of French toast and fruit yogurt before heading off to the beautiful Shiratani Unsuikyo.

IMG_7369.jpg IMG_7370.jpg IMG_7373.jpg

Again the ride up was a full of wildlife viewing with a great set of monkey shots. At first there was only 2 monkeys cleaning, then a third young monkey appeared from out of the brush, and like at the ring of a bell after finishing the top they all swayed to the left to take care of the bottom half of the old man. Too cute!!

IMG_7378.jpg IMG_7380.jpg IMG_7382.jpg

Shiratani Unsuikyo is a beautiful trail running alongside a gorge so as your walking up the trail you always have the beautiful sound of running water providing the BGM. We made our way up through the moss and cedar laden forest taking little off shoots to see some of the secret little treasures I have found in my many times along this trail.

IMG_7389.jpg IMG_7391.jpg IMG_7403.jpg

One of them is a beautiful waterfall just a few short minutes off the main trail, another little pocket of heaven!! After returning to the main trail we headed up past the Mononoke Hime forest where the film producer Mr. Miyazaki got the inspiration for the forest setting in the movie.

IMG_7408.jpg IMG_7443.jpg IMG_7464.jpg

We then headed to one of my most favorite places on Yakushima, the top of Taiko Iwa, a rocky outcrop with a beautiful view of Miyanoura dake and many other mountain tops.

View from Taiko

Lunch was Goto Udon and Avocado salad which we ate at the Shiratani mountain hut before heading down taking the virgin forest path which loops through ancient moss covered forests of thousand year old cedar trees before heading back to the trail head.

IMG_7481.jpg IMG_7483.jpg IMG_7510.jpg

After the hike it was time for a great bath at the local onsen and then Dinner!! Todays menu was a wafu salad and Kimuchi Nabe to fill up our belly`s before heading off to sleep after enjoying a live performance by Dave and another friend we met, one bit of advice though Dave, don`t make Rice the lead singer for your band ok!!

IMG_7516.jpg IMG_7517.jpg IMG_7522.jpg

After another beautiful early morning sunrise and a pancake breakfast we paced up our stuff and headed off to Kurio on the south western part of Yakushima to go for a dive and a bit of snorkeling. 28 degree water with 20 m visibility and fish and coral in abundance makes for a fantastic dive. It was my first time do dive in Yakushima and boy was I impressed!! I love this island!!!

IMG_7524.jpg IMG_7531.jpg IMG_7546.jpg
IMG_7534.jpg IMG_7540.jpg IMG_7554.jpg

We looped around the rest of the island stopping of at the Oko no taki before heading back to Miyanoura and our ferry home.

IMG_7581.jpg IMG_7610.jpg IMG_7612.jpg

It was a wonderful tour, my 7th time to the island and I still can`t wait to go back!! If you ever thought about going stop thinking about it and just go! You won`t be disappointed!!

Sunset at Sunset Live

IMG_7217.jpg

Hey there, it was another glorious day at the Sunset Live concert in Keya today. The weather was even better than yesterday, and there were a ton more people ( Gotta love Sunday! ). We were busy all afternoon taking people out on the water for a short trip around the bay to give them a different viewpoint.

IMG_7208.jpg IMG_7211.jpg

There was a bit of a break between 2 and 3 o`clock and I made good use of the time by practicing my Eskimo rolls. Eskimo rolls, for those of you how don`t know what they are, are for when your kayak flips upside down. You use your paddle and your hips to flip yourself back up saving yourself from having to empty water out of your kayak. I first learned how to do them in high school but haven`t done them since so it was great to try it again. Thanks to Sakai san from The North Face for helping me remember how to do them!

In other news, stay tuned for news about an upcoming trip to Yakushima!

Enjoying your summer?

IMG_7197.jpg

This month I have to admit I haven’t been to the mountains too much, with the rainy season finally over I`ve been spending most of August underwater working as a diving guide and instructor for Diving Club SUNS located in Minami ku. Nothing like an hour underwater to give an “Atsu gari” gaijin a break from the summer heat. Click here to check out the SUNS blog of our most recent adventure!

Until next time!
