阿蘇訓練

2nd Annual Aso Mountain Rescue Training

Aso Training

Hey everyone, last Monday a mountain rescue training exercise was held in the Aso mountains in Kumamoto. The training was held conducted with the Kyushu Rescue Dog Association , the Aso police and the Aso Mountain Rescue Team, a great bunch of guys who really know their stuff. The Kumamoto Rescue Helicopter “Hibari” also was to play a major part in the training but part way through they were called out for a real rescue in the Mimata area.

The scenario was a missing hiker and Mana and Kana both rescue dogs were sent out to try to find the trail of the missing hiker. Walking along a ridgeline Kana picked up a scent coming up the cliff and Mana was also sent in to verify. After verification the Mountain rescue team rappelled down to the location of the missing hiker, provided primary care and then pulled him up using a stretcher and off to the hospital.

It was a great day of training and I think the Aso rescue team is learning more about what our dogs can do and how useful they can be. It was also great for us to get more practice working with the rescue services.

Summer fun in Bogatsuru

obon bogatsuru

Hey everyone, how was your Obon Holiday? We had a great trip on August 14th, we went to one of my favorite hike, the Furube trail up the valley to the Bogatsuru camiing area in the Kuju Highlands. This is one of the easiest routes in the Kuju area and a really great forest walk and because it follows a river up the valley, even with a beautiful sunny sky it wasn`t hot at all it was actually quite cool!....Great for a Canadian!!

Characteristic with August in Japan, there were Dragon flies everywhere and a host of other creatures. We slowly worked our way up to Bogatsuru camp area where we enjoyed a yummy lunch of somen noodles and a delicious avocado dish.

After our lunch break we headed back down, this time following the trail on the opposite side of the valley and stopping at one of my favorite waterfalls, the “Kurazome no taki”, where we soaked up some minus Ions while Manachan cooled off.

It was a really great trip, I absolutely love this route. Please write a comment to let us know about how your holiday was.

防府市の災害

KRDA in Hofu City,Yamaguchi

hofu.jpg

Hey everyone, today`s blog is about our recent Search and Rescue callouts. As I`m sure all of you know, the end of July was epitomized with rain, rain, and more rain with many news reports about landslides and unfortunately many missing and dead. The area hit worst was a small town in Yamaguchi called Hofu, about a 2 ½ hour drive from Fukuoka, where landslides destroyed homes, property, crops, and the worst, the whole 1st floor of an elderly care home. This is where most of the casualties came from.

hofu (2) hofu (3)

Members of KRDA (Kyushu Rescue Dog Association) went to Hofu to assist with the search from July 22nd until the search part of the recovery was finished at the end of July. As an entirely volunteer association there was a constant rotation of members and their dogs as we all worked to find time to search as well has keeping up with our regular work schedules.

hofu (4) hofu (5)

For Mana and I, our time in Hofu was shorter than I wanted but it was a particularly busy time. We went up Thursday night, July 23rd after my English classes and searched from 0530 to 1230 when I had to head back to teach my Friday classes.

hofu (6) hofu (7)

The first place we went to was the care home, the KRDA head trainer, Kaida Sensei and his dog recovered at least one person in there earlier in the week but there was still one more person missing so we went in to take a look. After a quick search with no results we headed to another site just down the road where part of a house had washed away.

hofu (8) hofu (9)

The devastation in this area was a lot wider than at the first site, the mud came down the valley and washed away part of a home before coming to rest in what used to be rice fields. Unfortunately washed away with the home was an elderly woman who was still missing in the mud so it was our job to find any hints of her possible location so we could help direct the rest of the rescue services.

hofu (10) hofu (11)

We started from where the house washed away and fanned out in the direction of the flow. In one area where there was a large deposit of what was left of the house, Kaida Sensei`s dog went around one side and gave a bit of an alert so Mana and I went to the other side to see if she could find anything and all of a sudden she started to bark and the pile of rubble. (Mana is trained to bark if she detects human scent) It was the only hit we got so we suggested that they start digging there and after a couple hours of digging the remains of the woman were found around the area where Mana had barked.

Mana had her first find but it was a bitter sweet celebration. I was really happy that Mana did a great job, but it`s a completely different feeling finding someone alive than finding someone who has died. We are just glad that because of what our dogs can do the remaining family can start to recover and the missing can now rest.

There were about 10 people who went missing in the Hofu area and out of those at least 5 of those were found by rescue dogs from KRDA and our friends at Japan Rescue based in Osaka. We all hope that through these unfortunate incidents the rest of the rescue services will begin to see how valuable these dogs can be and start to call us in sooner and use us in a more productive way so we can have a better chance to find more people alive.

2nd Annual Nokonoshima Outdoor Kids Event

IMG_6982.jpg

Hey everyone, how are you all doing? We had a great time last weekend as we held an outdoor event for kids on Nokonoshima. This was our second time to hold this event and again it went off without a hitch. After crossing on the 10:15 ferry we headed up to the observation tower at the top of Noko where despite the cloudy weather we had a great view of Fukuoka and the surrounding ocean.

After taking in the landscape we headed down into the forest for a nature walk and some leaf picking. We gathered a bunch of leaves together to do leaf rubbings and to learn the English names of some of the trees in Fukuoka.

The trail eventually led us to a small park by the ocean where we enjoyed our pack lunch and a Compass navigation exercise before heading to catch the ferry home.

I think the kids had a really great time again this year and are looking forward to next years event.

In other news, stay tuned to the blog for details about our upcoming trip to Yakushima and also about our trip to Hofu City in Yamaguchi to assist in the Search and Rescue efforts after the flooding.

See you again soon!
