英彦山、日食ツアー

And the skies went dark!

Hiko (3) Hiko (9)

Hey everyone, as promised here is the next installment from my adventures last week. Today I`m going to write about the great trip we had to go and see the solar eclipse on the 22nd of July. What a great trip!!

Our original plan was to travel down to Miyazaki to see the eclipse from the top of Karakuni but the weather didn`t cooperate (It`s hard to see an eclipse through the rain clouds!), so we changed our destination to Mt. Hiko in Fukuoka. What a great idea!! We had an awesome time.

Hiko (5) Hiko (4) Hiko (6)

It started off early and interesting, as the eclipse was to occur around 11:00 we had to start our trip at 0 dark 30, so we could reach the top in time. We headed off to Mt. Hiko at around 5:00 and after we got to the beginning of the trail we noticed a small problem, Kimura sans shoes were disintegrating as she walked!! I was kind of worried about continuing the trip but so we found an answer ….Waraji! Good thing we came to Hiko! She got set up with a cool pair of Waraji and the owner of the shop helped putting them on, I wanted a pair too!!!

After we got the footwear sorted out we were back on the trail, or should I say stairway, anyway who`s climbed Hiko san knows that it involves a bunch or stairs but we plugged away and soon found ourselves on the more easily walkable trail. We made good time and we stopped just short of the summit to take in the eclipse, beautiful! We were actually happy to have overcast skies as it made viewing and taking photos of the eclipse a whole lot easier.

After the eclipse we worked our way up to the summit and lunch. For our return trip we headed off to the southern peak and the trail down to “Oni Cedar”, the oldest cedar in Fukuoka prefecture. On our way down to the tree we passed by a really interesting volcanic rock formation which looks like wood coming out of the ground.

After a short break at “Oni Sugi” we continued on our looping tour which took us passed the beautiful Tamaya shrine, this is one magical place with the rock face jutting up from the shrine protecting what I`m sure is a cave going into the rock. I`d love to get a chance to go in and take a look!

We then completed the final leg of our tour and everyone did really well especially the “waraji”! Amazing technology from so long ago!

By the time we reached the car we were all getting pretty hungry so we worked our way down to Hita city and to my favorite Gyoza shop!! YUM YUM!!

It was really a wonderful day with a really good ending! I can`t wait to get back out there again!

Until next time, Happy trails!!

坊がつるツアー

What a crazy week I just had!

Kuju (6)

Hey everyone how ya doin`? Sorry for the long gap between postings but there has just been a ton of stuff going on, we had a couple tours, an eclipse, too much Gyoza, a wedding and a disaster search, all in the space of a week. I know, no rest for the wicked but Jeez!

Anyway there is too much stuff to put in one posting so I`m going to break them up a bit, today I`m just going to write about the tour we had to Kuju just over a week ago.

Kuju (2) Kuju (3)

The first tour we had was a week ago on Saturday, July 18th, were we went for a great day hike around the base of Mt. Mimata in the Kuju Highlands. We started off from Chojobaru and hiked up the “Ame Ga Ike” route until we reached Bogatsuru camp where we stopped for a delicious lunch of Herbs and rice and beans and macaroni. Thanks to our resident ebay maniac Mr. Rice for providing the lunches ( Just add Water, stir, wait 3 minutes and dig in! ) They were really good, thanks Rice!! ( So good I forgot to take pictures!)

Kuju (4) Kuju (5)

After lunch we headed up the volcanic side of Mt. Mimata until we reached the Sugamori shelter and had a break before starting our descent back down to Chojobaru and off to Hita city for some delicious Gyoza!

Kuju (7) Kuju.jpg

It was really a great day and it was great to see our friend Ben after such a long time.
Anyway tune in Wednesday for the next blog about our trip to Mt. Hiko where we went to see the eclipse.

See ya then…

大崩ツアー

The rainy season is almost over!

kozumidaki.jpg

Hey everyone how are you enjoying all this rainy weather?? Not to fear because it`s almost over and soon it will be the hot sticky summer we know and love!!

To celebrate the end of the rainy season we have a great tour heading out to Okue during the long weekend. We`ll be heading there on the morning of the 18th and staying overnight in the huge mountain hut, there is a toilet but sorry no vending machine. (he he)

After a nice meal we`ll head off to bed and wake up to either climb to the top of Mt. Okue or head off along the stream for a beautiful forest walk. The route will depend on experience and the desires of the group.

Either route you take is absolutely beautiful and it will be a great trip for any experience level. After the hike we`ll head to the onsen before heading home. We`ll arrive back the night of the 19th so you`ll have the 20th to relax before going back to work. The tour cost is ¥17000 with transportation included.

If this sounds like fun to you drop me an email at john@amarok-outdoors.com
Lets go and explore this wonderful area, it`s the same area that I wrote about in last years Fukuoka Now.
