Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had a great Christmas, did you get any hiking gear from Santa? How has the rest of your holiday season been going? Yesterday we had a great hike up Inugatake one of Kyushu`s top 100 mountains located in central Fukuoka prefecture, not too far from Mt. Hiko.

We couldn`t have asked for better weather, the sun was shining and there wasn`t a cloud in the sky, It was a little chilly at the start but once we got moving we were fine. At the beginning of our adventure we were greeted by a deer along the trail who seemed to be wishing us a great day of outdoor fun.

Once we hiked up a little higher we found some really neat ice formations, we saw lots of icicles and ones that had been there so long that the ice built up from underneath to meet them in the middle. By far the most interesting ice formation was the one that had grown along the underneath a small branch and hung down like a curtain underneath the branch.
While some of us took pictures of the ice formations Mr. Rice had his snack and Manachan had hers.

We then carried on up the mountain through Rhododendrons (シャクナゲ), sunshine and snow to reach the summit and lunch time!! The view from the summit was huge and with the weather we had we could clearly see Yufudake and all the mountains of the Kuju Highlands.

After lunch and a quick brew we headed back down, this time from the other side of the mountain to complete the looping course. The hike down followed a small stream with lots of great picture opportunities and some spectacular waterfalls.

This was a really great hike, and we`ll definitely be coming back when the Rhododendrons are in bloom as there were tons!

Our next adventure will be new years day as we will be greeting the first sunrise of 2009 from the top of a mountain. We`ll be leaving after midnight of January 1st and there are still spots available so let me know if you`re interested. john@amarok-outdoors.com

三日月山ハイク

Kashi`s Mikazuki Mountain

1_20081216092907.jpg

Hey there everyone how was your weekend? Did you go play outside for a bit? With it getting cooler and Christmas right around the corner you might not be thinking about going hiking too much but this is a great time to go for a hike. I`ll blog a little more about winter hiking in the near future cause today I want to write about a great little hike I had a few days ago here in Fukuoka.

The original plan was to go up Mt. Sangun but in the morning the weather looked a bit iffy so we called it off, but low and behold come lunch time the clouds lifted a bit and the sun came out! Well, we wanted to go for a hike but with not that much daylight left our choices were limited, and then I remembered Mt. Mikazuki located next to Mt. Tachibana in Kashi. Perfect!!

There were still some remnants of autumn with the Maple trees a beautiful red and orange and the trail covered with fallen leaves. The sazanka were also in bloom and still some patches of snow left over from the day before. The hike is easy and you can take your time and explore the forest walk leading up to the 360 degree view from the summit. The view from the top was spectacular, with Fukuoka city in front and the eastern mountains behind us. It was a really great hike and I recommend it to anyone!

三郡山の日帰りツアー

This Weekends Adventure

Hi everyone just wanted to give you all an idea of what we`ll be up to this weekend. Last weekend we went to Mt. Homan and to continue our discovery of the local Fukuoka mountains. This Sunday the 7th, we`ll be heading up the same trailhead but this time we`ll be heading to Mt. Sangun. To give you an idea, when you look to the mountains near Dazaifu and you see a big radar tower at the top of one of the mountains, that’s Mt. Sangun. If your free this weekend and want to get a great view of Fukuoka and catch the last of the autumn leaves why not come with us. The cost is ¥6000 , and that includes transportation and a light lunch. Hope to see you there!
