Mt. Homan Day trip
Hey everyone how`s your weekend going? We had a great day today, the weather was awesome and we hiked to the top of Mt. Homan from the Showa No Mori trailhead in Umi town. The trip was originally planned for yesterday but because the weather was crap we decided to postpone it a day, and we are so glad we did as the weather was perfect!!
The trail we took to the top is not the usual trail that everyone takes to Mt. Homan, it`s more well known as the trail leading to Nanshogataki, which is a very slow waterfall that may not be much to look at now but every year during the coldest part of the winter the waterfall freezes up and it`s one of the most beautiful things you`ll ever see. As you can see from the photo it`s not at all frozen yet so we`ll have to come back again in a month or so.
After we passed Nanshogataki we worked our way up to the trail that traverses the ridge and links these mountaintops together, and headed for Mt. Homan. At the beginning of our trip it was a little cloudy but last nights` prayers to the weather god paid off as we were greeted at the top by a beautiful blue sky and an amazing view, we could even see Mt. Hiko and the Ariake Sea.
Mt. Hiko is in the middle of the frame
After a quick lunch and a rejuvenating time at the top we headed back down, this time taking another little used trail called the “Usagi michi” or Rabbit road where even on a beautiful Sunday we didn`t run into any other hikers all the way down.
What a great day we had today and I can`t wait for our next adventure. Things have been a little hectic around here lately so I haven`t put up the December schedule yet but that`ll be up in the next day or so, so be sure to check it out and lets go for a hike. You can also email me to let me know if there is somewhere particular you want to go.
Until next time…
The Banff Mountain Film Festival
Hi everyone, hows your long weekend going? We`re heading out for a trip tomorrow but before we go I wanted to pass along so info for people who don`t yet have plans on Monday November 24th
This Monday is the presentation of the 2008 Banff Mountain Film Festival. This yearly event is a collection of outdoor short films. There are some really interesting films here with something for everyone with a love for the outdoors. Check out the link for details http://www.banff.jp/
See you there!!!
KRDA Rescue dog Event
Hey everyone how was your weekend? We had a busy one with Manachan and I travelling down to Hitoyoshi city in Southern Kumamoto to take part in a Search and Rescue dog training event.
The event was divided into 2 parts; a disaster search
and a woodland search. In both searches there were
2 people hiding in both areas. As we stayed overnight
on Saturday we did our searches in the morning and
unfortunately there was absolutely no wind so it was
hard for me to read the alerts that Mana was giving
but it was a great learning experience.
The disaster search was too easy with Manachan
finding both of the helpers really quickly.
For anyone who`s interested in K9 search and rescue or would maybe like to
help out with training the dogs feel free to send me an email.
Until next time…
Hey everyone, how was your weekend? A little wetter than expected but oh well, what can you do!! We had a great tour to Yufudake in Oita on Monday! After arriving at the trailhead we were glad to see that there were still many leaves on the trees so we could still enjoy the colours of Autumn.
As we walked through the forest looked more like a photo shoot than a hiking trip as we kept stopping to take pictures of the beautiful fall leaves, there was THAT much to see!
Once we worked our way up a little higher and cleared the forest cover the view opened up so we could see the whole of Yufuin and the surrounding landscape.
Once we reached the pass between the 2 summits we decided to go for gold and climb to the west summit, which is at 1584m. It was a bit of a climb to the top with a couple of areas that were pretty steep but with a little effort we soon reached the top.
After spending a little time at the top we decided to head down a little before eating lunch as the temperature at the summit was 1degree, brrrr.
We found a real nice spot along the trail that was out of the wind and had a great view, so it was there that I whipped up a quick lunch of Carbonara Gratin, Yum Yum!
After scarfing that down we headed back down the mountain and as it`s starting to get darker earlier we were lucky enough to catch glimpses of a lot of deer, some were actually quite close at about 15 meters away.
They were too fast to catch a good shot of them but after we reached the bottom we waited a little bit for it to get a bit darker and in one picture you can see three sets of little eyes!
It was really a great adventure and we`re looking forward to going out again. The next trip here at Amarok is our long weekend trip to Yakushima from the 22nd to the 24th, and our next day trip will be on the 29th to Mt. Homan from the Showa no Mori trailhead. There is still room on both these trips so why not come out and play!! Drop me an email at email@example.com
Until next time!!
Fukuchiyama Tour Report
Hey everyone, how was your long weekend? Ours was great, we had a great tour to Fukuchiyama in Kitakyushu. This is one of my favorite mountains in Fukuoka with a whole lot of everything!!
We took the Nanae no taki route to the top and the Kyushu Nature trail back to the bottom.
The route up was fantastic with waterfall after waterfall and finishing with my favourite, the No. 7 waterfall….just magical!!
We then followed the route through a beautiful autumn forest as we headed to the top. Before the final push to the top we stopped at the hut for my yummy cheese risotto lunch and some tasty okara cookies made by Miyamoto San, thanks again they were delicious!!
After scrambling to the summit and looking out over the valley below we slowly meandered down the Kyushu Nature trail back to the trail head.
I hope you all had a great long weekend as we all did and I hope to see you on our next outdoor adventure.
The next trip is on November 9th when we will be hiking through the beautiful forests of Tsurumidake in Oita prefecture, there is still space available if you would like to get out and enjoy autumn in Japan in the most satisfying way.
Send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Until next time......
