Yufudake Tour Report

Yufudake Tour

IMG_2717.jpg

Hey there, how was your weekend? We had a great trip to Yufudake in Oita. The weather was overcast in the morning but by the time we got going it had cleared up into a beautiful day! We started our hike from the eastern trail head and after a great walk through the beautiful autumn forest we started to head up and up and up…..The last part was a bit of a scramble with a couple of areas that Manachan had to think about before going up but we made it up without too much trouble.

IMG_2700.jpg IMG_2698_20081027100654.jpg IMG_2696.jpg

The view from the top was awesome, there were still a few low lying clouds around Tsurumidake to the east , but to the west you could see the whole of the Kuju mountains. Also the treetops below us mottled with the beautiful colours of fall, what a great time of year in Japan!!

I can`t wait for our next trip.

Takachiho SAR Callout

Weekend Search

IMG_2603.jpg

Hi everyone, how was your weekend? We were quite busy here, after a great day of diving in Nagasaki we received a request to go searching for a lost hiker in the Takachiho area of Miyazaki. We got our gear ready and left Saturday night. We met up with other members of the Kyushu Rescue Dog Association early Sunday morning and headed for the Search HQ located at the trail head.

IMG_2607.jpg

After receiving our area of responsibility we headed up the mountain is search of Mr Morizono who had been missing on the mountain since Saturday Oct 11thjust over a week ago. We were searching the south side of “Futagoishi” for a few hours when we received word that his body had been found by another team on the opposite side of the ridge.
It was an unfortunate ending, but now that he is found his family can begin the healing process and we wish them well during this sad time.

This is a link to the news article about the search, it`s in Japanese.

Busy Long weekend

5 Mountains in 3 Prefectures in 4 days!!

IMG_2477.jpg

Hey everyone, how was your weekend? Ours was great, but unfortunately we had to postpone our trip to Yakushima until the November long weekend 22-24. Instead we went crazy going all over Kyushu and climbing mountains all over the place.
Last Friday we climbed to the top of Mt.Bucho and Mt.Homan in Fukuoka from the Showa no Mori Trail head. It was a great hike and a really fun route to the top of Fukuoka`s most popular mountain.

IMG_2345.jpg IMG_2365.jpg
IMG_2380.jpg IMG_2356.jpg

On Saturday we went down to the Ebino plateau in Miyazaki for an overnight trip to climb Mt. Takachiho and Mt. Karakuni. The weather was awesome and this area is absolutely beautiful with HUGE scenery. On our way up Takachiho we met Yoron a great guy from Israel who lives in Kagoshima. We joined up to tackle the summit together. On the summit of Takachiho is the “Ama-no-Sakahoko” The Heavenly upside down spear presumably dropped by the god Ninigi-no-Mikoto as a landmark to find his way back to heaven.

IMG_2396.jpg IMG_2403.jpg

After taking a break at a gateway to heaven we headed down the mountain and found a great Yakiniku restaurant at the entrance to Kirishima Shrine, all you can eat for ¥1000!!!!, My kind of place!!

Crater.jpg IMG_2453.jpg

With an overly full tummy we headed off to setup our tents and enjoyed a bit of moon viewing before heading off to bed listening to the sounds of deer in the distance…….and then the loud noise of Mana barking at them!
IMG_2467.jpg Deer.jpg IMG_2469.jpg

The next day we woke to a glorious day and after a slow morning we headed off to climb Mt. Karakuni and after a 2 hour scramble we reached one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Kyushu, the view of Mt. Takachiho (Top Photo). Just awesome!! After lunch we headed back down and enjoyed a beautiful sunset on our way home.

IMG_2475.jpg IMG_2480.jpg susuki.jpg

On Monday we headed out again, this time to climb Mt. Kuju. We reached the Makinoto pass around 9:30 and were on the trail by 10:00. The weather was just fabulous with a beautiful blue sky and almost no clouds. We arrived at the summit just before noon and had a nice relaxing lunch and soaked up the scenery.

A great way to spend the long weekend! Until next time….

True Camp 2008

True Camp 2008

True Camp group1

Hi everyone how was your weekend? Ours here at Amarok was great, yesterday was a little wet but still a lot of fun. Last weekend we took part in the TRUE CAMP outdoor event put on by The North Face and A&F Country. TRUE CAMP is a great event which lets people try out a variety of outdoor activities such as Hiking and Mountain Biking and cooking with a Dutch Oven..yum yum!!
The event started Saturday afternoon so we thought that since we were in the Kuju area let`s go for a hike before we go to the camp! We hiked up Mt. Hosho 1762m from the Makinoto pass. It was a great hike with a great view from the top where we stopped for a quick lunch before heading back down to the camp.

Lunch.jpg Mt. Kuju

After a great dinner and an evening around the campfire we headed to our tents and a good nights sleep. In the morning we woke to the sound of raindrops bouncing off the tents, yes it was raining but that`s what rainwear is for!!
After a quick French toast breakfast it was time to get ready as this year I was guiding the hiking tours!!
We lead 2 tours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both times we went to Kakushimizu, a nice little spot about 30 minutes up the trail to Mt. Kuro. After a short coffee break there we headed down to Oike a delicious fresh water spring which is one of the top 100 fresh water springs in Japan. Even though it was still raining we all had great time exploring.
